River Choir Comments:
This song was written in homage to the St. Croix River and all who have called this beautiful region home. It traces the history of those who have inhabited the St. Croix watershed, ending with an unapologetic recognition that “it hasn’t been so easy to find a common ground, to share the River’s riches, leave enough to go around.” Its approachable melody and solid harmonies make this an appropriate song for most SATB choirs. Listeners have said that this song inspires and motivates them to do as the song asks, “to protect and restore, all that we adore: The Wild and Scenic St. Croix.” Although this song is copywritten, I am happy to grant permission to any choral director who would like to use this in a performance.
Bound to the River was composed, performed, and recorded in honor of the 50th Anniversary of the Wild and Scenic Rivers Act. The photographs that accompany the recording were created by Gary Noren, a St. Croix watershed resident and well-known advocate for the River. Dan Chouinard improvised the piano accompaniment when the River Singers recorded this piece with the Resonating Chamber Recording Studio. We owe immense gratitude to Peter Gove who personally and financially supported this project and to the St. Croix Watershed Research Station where Gary and I spent a month through the Pine Needles artist-in-residence program, composing music and photographing the River.
